LSHP
Latino Student Health Project
Promoting preventative health education & increasing access to health services in medically underserved communities
What is LSHP?
The Latino Student Health Project (LSHP) at UCLA is a student-run organization that strives to reduce health disparities within medically underserved communities across Los Angeles County and Tecate, Mexico. LSHP hosts free health fairs and promotes preventative health education in order to increase access to health services in medically underserved communities and reduce the risk of chronic diseases within these populations. At our sites we provide free hypertension, anemia, glucose, cholesterol, and BMI screenings, consultations with providers, nutrition education, community resources, and distribute clothing, food, and hygiene items. At each health fair we have provider and nurse volunteers participate alongside student volunteers and assist with the screenings and consultations. Additionally, we team up with Midnight Mission, a shelter that provides housing and other services to people who are unhoused, every quarter by volunteering at their kitchen. To stay involved look out for sign ups in the LSHP slack and well as the LCCM slack.
You must be LSHP trained to volunteer with us at an LSHP health fair. Training is valid for one academic school year, and one will be hosted at an LCCM meeting at the beginning of fall quarter as well as before every health fair. Additionally, the Risk and Research Coordinator hosts hypertension trainings (valid for 2 years) three times a quarter which qualifies volunteer to work at the Blood Pressure Station at our health fairs.
